Board Member Application

Thank you for considering the opportunity to serve our community as a member of the Board of Directors of United Way of Northwest Michigan.

United Way of Northwest Michigan is bringing donors, volunteers, and community organizations together to solve critical problems in our five-county region. We connect our community of hand raisers, game changers, problems solvers around our communities biggest challenges. We give, advocate, and volunteer for a better community for all. 

 

Before completing an application, please review the following information.

Our Focused Approach

We invest resources primarily in these key areas: 

  • Education: Helping kids stay healthy and graduate from high school

  • Health: Fighting substance use and reducing childhood obesity

  • Financial Stability: Providing a safety net for vulnerable populations

Community Impact

  • Financial grants to alliance partners awarded through an extensive review process led and monitored by a Community Action Team.

  • Serve as the hub of volunteering for our entire region by connecting the hand raisers to opportunities and agencies. 

  • Funding and oversight for 211 – a free one-stop call center available 24/7 for assistance with health and human service needs.

  • Community data, such as the biennial ALICE Report (Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed), to help define community needs, priorities and inform public policy.

  • Mobilizing the problem solvers in our community. 

Board Member Expectations and Responsibilities

  • Attend all board meetings and required board events (unless excused in advance).

    • Board meetings are held on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 8:00 AM

  • Serve on a board committee or ad hoc work group when requested.

  • Support the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plan.

  • Provide oversight and governance to ensure accountability, financial stability, and the strategic priorities of the organization are met.

  • Be a diligent and prudent steward of the organization’s assets.

  • Stay informed about the organization and participate in discussions and decisions on policies and other board matters.

  • Act in the best interests of United Way and adhere to the by-laws, code of ethics, and conflict of interest policy of the organization.

  • Serve as an ambassador for the organization’s mission and brand, representing its work and value to the community.

  • Consider in-kind support for the organization if applicable.

  • Make an annual non-designated contribution to United Way of Northwest Michigan at the Leadership Level ($500 or more)

Board Terms and Selection

New board members are elected to a three-year term that begins on January 1.  Board members may serve up to two consecutive three-year terms.  The Nominating Committee reviews and selects candidates for nomination to the full Board of Directors for approval and election.
