Do more with AmeriCorps VISTA!

In 2015, United Way of Northwest Michigan recognized 50 years of Volunteers In Service To America. VISTA was founded in 1965 as a national service program to fight poverty in America. In 1993, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs. Let’s keep up the amazing work!

Today, more than 46 million Americans live in poverty. AmeriCorps VISTA taps the skills, talents, and passion of more than 7,000 Americans annually to support community efforts to overcome poverty.

By serving with AmeriCorps VISTA, you can make a tangible difference. And, you’ll find the fulfillment that comes from using your knowledge and skills to help those in disadvantaged circumstances turn their dreams into reality.

Locally, we have 7 VISTAs placed with agencies to help expand their organization’s capacity. These individuals have helped recruit volunteers, develop new programming, and have helped bring in thousands of grant dollars for program support!

VISTA’s Currently Serving:

AmeriCorpsVISTA Spotlight – Billy Schwab – Inland Seas

Billy is an AmeriCorps VISTA in Northwest Michigan, currently serving at Inland Seas in Suttons Bay. This is Billy’s second term in the AmeriCorps program, having served last year in Indianapolis as a tutor. He started his term August 2016 and is currently working on recruiting teachers throughout the Great Lakes region for professional development opportunities where they can take classes outdoors, and positively affect their environment through hands-on learning. When asked why he decided to join AmeriCorps, he said that he looks at it as an opportunity to gain experience as an educator, and behind the scenes facilitator within the realm of education. Billy has thoroughly enjoyed his time as a VISTA, and says he can’t wait to finish his degree so that he can become a teacher as well.

Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire Great Lakes curiosity, stewardship, and passion to people of all ages. Through hands-on, experiential learning activities aboard a traditionally rigged tall ship schooner, participants gain the knowledge needed to understand the commitment necessary for the long-term stewardship of the Great Lakes.
