Frequently Asked Questions

Why United Way?
We are able to efficiently raise money that agencies (large and small) could not raise themselves.  We are able to effectively distribute these resources to those who are having the greatest impact.

Why programs not agencies?
By granting money to programs our Citizen Action Teams can pinpoint funding to the programs they feel are having the greatest impact.  Because of this, it is possible for an agency to receive more than one grant per year.

What percentage of my gift is used for administrative costs?
Our administrative overhead on contributions is set at 18%.  Beyond traditional overheard/fundraising expenses this amount subsidizes the operation of the Volunteer Center.  Because the Volunteer Center is actively working to help area non profits find the volunteers they need, this subsidy actually provides value to the non profits we serve.

How do you decide who gets funded?
Each spring we receive about 60 applications from area non-profits.  These applications are reviewed by our grants committee to assure the applications are complete and meet the guidelines established by the Board.  Then a team of 15 volunteers, the Citizen Action Team (CAT) review the applications.  The CAT meets and conducts interviews with each of the applicants and determines which programs will be funded.

Who qualifies to receive a grant?
Any health or human service non profit agency operating in one or more of the following counties: Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, and Leelanau.
