Emergency Food & Shelter
Each year the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) provides supplemental funding to over 12,000 agencies in more than 2,500 communities across the country. EFSP provides funding to support various initiatives including: rent assistance, food for meals and pantries, baby pantries, hostels and homes for the homeless and displaced, and more. More than 20 nonprofits in Leelanau, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Antrim counties received over $100,000 during the 2009/2010 Phase 28.
United Way of NWMI acts as the administrative agent between the agencies in the counties we serve and the National Board. EFSP is under the United Way Worldwide umbrella. No specific agency or entity "owns" EFSP. The funding is provided by the government and United Way's across the country manage the programs in their jurisdictions.
The fiscal year 2011 funding to be awarded to the National Board for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) is $119,760,000.00. The funds have now been made available to FEMA and the EFSP National Board is developing the allocation forumla which will determine those jurisdictions that qualify for funding. Once FEMA has notified Congres of the National Board's allocations as required and FEMA has awarded the funds to the National Board, the National Board expects to notify all of the qualifying jurisdictions in the mid-July timeframe.
