Education
Education is the cornerstone of individual and community success. But with more than 1.2 million children dropping out of school each year America faces an education crisis. These trends are reversible, but only when communities and public, private, and nonprofit sectors work together.
In 2011 United Way of Northwest Michigan awarded grants to 39 different programs. Of those grants 9 were designated specifically for education purposes for a total award of $63,500.00. Following is a list of agencies who received one or more education grants from United Way of Northwest Michigan in 2011.
Habitat for Humanity - SEEDS Green Build
SEEDS - Growing Venture
Women's Resource Center - DOULA
Communities in Schools of Mancelona
District Health Department #10 - Girls On The Run
Child & Family Services - Elements
Big Brothers Big Sisters - Mentors
American Red Cross - CPR Training for Youth
Scenic Trails Boy Scouts Council - Youth Camp
In addition to the grants we have also organized the Martin Luther King Jr., read to kids day. Doctor King’s legacy is one of civic engagement and calling people to act on behalf of others. Each year we partner with area schools to teach this timeless message. Every January we put together a corps of volunteers who read books to area school children. The books highlight the importance of helping and encourage children to consider how they can improve the world in which they live.
